How to start a home travel business
It’s hard for me to understand who wouldn’t want to start a home travel business. You get to enjoy FAM trips, flight discounts, cruises at rock-bottom prices and all kinds of other benefits. It’s a business you can run virtually anywhere, whether you fancy the mountains of Colorado or the beaches of Montañita, Ecuador.
And you get paid, and paid well, to send people off to have the experiences of their lives.
If you’re reading this article you’re probably nodding your head in agreement. Pardon me for preaching to the choir. Since you’re already sold on WHY you should be running your own home travel business, allow me to elaborate on HOW to get one up and running.
Here are the three basic steps you’re going to need to take:
Step #1 – Make sure this is right for you
So, you’re already sold on the dream of being a home travel agent, and working for yourself in your own business. Let me bring that dream down to reality.
Don’t worry; the reality I’m talking about is still floating in the clouds.
The life of a home based agent, or anybody that works from home for that matter, is much different than the average lifestyle. In exchange for living a dream, you leave much of the security your used to behind.
You don’t have the office camaraderie you enjoy at a standard 9 to 5. You don’t have anybody to blame if something goes wrong. Beyond that, running a home travel business is drastically different than working for an established travel agent. There’s nobody to guarantee you a paycheck every week. If you’re not earning and giving service to clients, you aren’t going to eat.
Of course, the perks are there. Being an independent agent does give you the opportunity to make ridiculous amounts of money. It also awards you with unrivaled freedom and the flexibility to live how you want, where you want and with whom you want.
Just make sure that you can stomach the risk that goes along with that freedom before you jump in with both legs.
Step #2 – Find out about licensure
Every state and jurisdiction is different; you have to be aware of what kinds of licensure and certification you will need in your area. Some jurisdictions require little more than a simple form submission… while others practically require you to swear over your first born.
Once you know what you’re up against, you have to make the personal decision as to whether the price tag (in money and time) is worth the effort. While it isn’t an everyday occurrence, some do find the price to start up a travel business to be prohibitive.
Most training resources outline what steps you need to take to be legally recognized as a travel business in your area. The better ones also include the necessary forms you need to fill out and submit.
Step #3 will discuss training further.
Step #3 – Get the right training
The allure of running a home travel business will quickly turn into a nightmare, if you aren’t prepared. Just having a dream of working one of the most exciting industries isn’t enough… you need the training behind you to make it your efforts worth it.
If I had one recommendation to give aspiring home travel business owners, I would recommend giving a look at the courses that Amazon offers. They are much cheaper than most training courses you can find, and the depth rivals travel agent school curriculums.
There are three resources in particular that take you by the hand and show you everything you need to know to start a home travel business.
