Personal Training Certification Nsca

is AFAA a good, basic intro-level, recognized personal training certification?

The question says it all. There are so many different certifications..is AFAA a good intro-level one to have? I have been weight training and exercising for about 5 years regularly and love the healthy lifestyle I have been living. I want to be a personal trainer. I know that other places like NSCA are probably too advanced for me now, because although I know my way around the weight room I dont have any real indepth knowledge of muscle groups, etc…I was thinking get certified with AFAA, then proceeding to a more advanced one like NSCA. Lastly, with a certification from AFAA would I be able to get a job at a gym as a trainer? Is this nationally recognized and respected or looked at as a low-level certification? Thank you.

The AFAA personal trainer certification is one of the “big 7″ certification programs. You are right that it doesn’t have the prestige of the NSCA but you don’t need that at this point in your career. Check the links below for a page on the AFAA cert and a comparison of all 7 major personal trainer certifications.

p.s. you are going to need to study to learn about the muscle groups. Even the entry level certs require that.
