Here’s the 411:
I found a job listing on career builder for a company called Bar Careers. I spoke with a representative on the phone, and they offer an at home training program that gives a license of certification upon graduation. For $84.00, I am sent the materials (stainless steel mixing cup, cocktail recipe book, etc) and information to school myself and earn the license for bartending. They guarantee job offers within two weeks of earning the license or they refund the $84.
Does this sound legit to any of you with personal knowledge of this? I just thought I’d check. Is this is reasonable price or could I find a better training program for less?
I thought I should ask around before divulging my banking information to someone over the phone for payment on this.
I have not used the service myself, but a friend of mine did. He said it was a complete scam. The jobs that he was sent were
ones that they found on sites like Craig’s list–jobs anyone can apply for. And as a bartender myself there is no way that someone will offer you a job without ever seeing you! Bottom line, get any crappy bartending job for some experience and then go from there! My first job right out of bartending school helped me do just that. Good luck. P.S. My friend has never received a refund from Bar Careers!
