Laptop Personal Training Certifications

I am starting a business, what things can i write off come tax time?

I am starting a personal training business out of my house and i was wondering what kinds of things i am able to write off come tax time? I have certification class expenses and I am buying a laptop and smaller equipment and other little stuff that i need but i was wondering if this is all stuff that i can write off as a business expense? Also are you allowed to claim household bills on taxes as well considering the business will be run out of my house?

Expenses that are reasonable and necessary for your business are eligible deductions. Startup expenses though aren’t all deducted the first year, they’re amortized, or spread across several years.

Unless the laptop is used ONLY for your business, you can’t deduct the full amount, you’d have to prorate it for business use.

If you have a place in your house that’s used ONLY for business, you might be eligible for a home office deduction, which could include part of SOME of the household bills like utilities.

You’d be wise to see a tax professional at least your first year, to help you get started right.
