Your opinion?
I was wondering if you all think this is weird. Both my parents are immigrants and my dad got his college education and career in engineering here. They’re both Chinese and carry the language and culture from their home country. They’re citizens here, and I’ve been born here and adapted American values. I can’t seem to connect with people of my blood or country/Hong Kong. So I guess you get the picture. I have very different values, interests, and opinions than my parents. We both respect each other, but it’s hard to relate sometimes.
So here it is, I’m this 19 yr-old Asian that lives in the city and currently at college. I don’t really fit the stereotype with the ones that have perfect SAT’s, play the violin, and go to an Ivy league college studying law, medicine, or science. I love horseback riding, rodeos, and sports. I’m attracted to country and military guys that are 2-5 yrs older than me and want to get married to that type and live in the country one day. Is this weird?
You are more normal than the Ivy League group. Just be yourself. It is a big adjustment for an Asian boy, but from what you have said I get the feeling you are doing very well. You do not have to be like anyone else, just be yourself.
As for your relationship with your parents, try to respect their opinions, they have lived longer.
Good Luck
